Pattern for a crochet cowl to use your scrap yarn

Double Scrap Cowl, crochet pattern for a cowl to use scrap yarn

Double Scrap Cowl is an easy and fun crochet cowl with stripes. This is a great project to use your scrap/leftover yarn, or advent sets.
Use one main color and several contrast colors throughout the project, or make a totally unique project and change colors constantly.

Inspiration
Do you craft for a while and have already accumulated a few skeins of yarn, and have leftover yarn from other finished projects? This is definitely me, and I have some shelves full of yarn.
It is great to start some projects with brand new skeins, but occasionally I go through my stash and want to use some oddballs and unfinished skeins, to clear some space for new yarn :).
So, the idea for this design started with these thoughts. I had one full skein of fingering sock yarn (and don't want to make socks with it) and a couple of not-so-full skeins in fingering and sport weight. The colors played very well together, and I wanted to combine them. Also, I wanted something quick and easy, so it will be nice to take the project on the go. This is my wish list for the project:
  • fingering weight yarn holding double strand, or DK/sport with single strand
  • at least 2 relatively contrasting colors
  • big hook (bigger than normal for this type of yarn) for speedy crochet
  • easy repetitive stitch pattern
  • simple shape
And the end result is Double Scrap Cowl.

Yarn
For the sample, I used Hand Dyed Diva Homegrown Sock 80% SW Shaniko wool, 20% Nylon, 424 yds (388 m)/3.5 oz (100 g). This brand doesn't exist anymore, but the same ladies are working under WoolTribe name now. I used colors Purple Speckle as the main color and Bright Pink as 1st contrast color.
The 2nd contrast color here is Madeline Tosh Work Sock Sport 75% SW Merino wool, 25% Nylon, 400 yds (366 m)/6.5 oz (190 g) in color Coquette-Deux. Looks like this yarn is already discontinued. But you can find plenty of different yarns on Madeline Tosh website.

But of course, you don't need to use exact yarn. And even, you don't need to use fingering and DK/sport weight. You can jump to worsted weight, too. Just get a bigger hook, the pattern has a recommendation about it.
When choosing colors for your project, look if two stanging together colors have contrast between them, so the stripe effect is visible in your project. And again, you can choose more than 2-3 colors. And mix them in different sequences.
Here is an example of a 3 color combination, I changed them like so: C1 (red) + C2 (green), C1 (red) + C3 (white), C2 (green) + C3 (white).

Construction
The cowl works along the width and as long as you want (or as long as your yarn stretches), and at the end, you need to make one seam to connect two short sides together.
If you're not a fan of a cowl, you don't need to seam sides; you can totally leave it as a scarf. The pattern has a recommendation about the length. Most likely, you need more yarn for the scarf than the cowl.

Stitch pattern
The cowl uses a Linen stitch pattern, and this involves only chains and single crochet, the most "complicated" part is to change colors every two rows.

Skills needed to make the Double Scrap Cowl
The pattern difficulty is marked as Easy. You’ll need to know how to do basic crochet stitches (chain and single crochet). Also, you need to know how to change colors before finishing the last stitch of the previous color, and how to make a seam using a mattress or whip stitch.
