Crochet pattern to try free form corner to corner (C2C) technique.
In 2020 together with several other volunteers, I was making hearts for our annual #waxhawyarnbomb project. You can click on the hashtag or find a little bit more info about it on my website in the Publications and Collaboration section. Every year we’re doing a different theme, and 2020 was the year of hearts.
I was making a lot of hearts, and to keep it more interesting, I was making them not only in different colors and sizes, but also using different techniques: knit, crochet, working in the round, or bottom to top, or used granny square, etc. And at some point, I came across the picture from Heartsprinkle of a heart made with the corner to corner (C2C) method. I love C2C, and I made already several projects using C2C, so of course, I tried this heart too. I experimented with several charts, just made some drawings on graph paper, and came up with one that I like, and made several hearts using it.
A little bit later that year, I thought about how else I can use these types of hearts, I like making them, but the #waxhawyarnbomb project was already done and we don’t need hearts anymore.
And the idea to create something for Valentine’s day popped into my head. I went to my favorite LYS, Tangles Knitting on Main, and grabbed a couple of colors of Berroco Vintage yarn, and the creative process has begun.
I decided to make a wall decor piece, of course, in the shape of a heart but to give a little more stability to the piece, I added a metal hoop around it.
To make this project, you should know how to do basic corner to corner crochet and how to change colors for C2C. The pattern describes all the C2C blocks that you’ll need to make the project. It has two charts (one chart for each design) and row-by-row written instructions. It has extra pictures to show how to finish the project.
This is a good pattern to introduce you to free form corner to corner crochet and you can explore more shapes with C2C and not only stay ‘in the box’ with square or rectangular blankets.
To make this project you’ll need:
Worsted weight yarn, I used Berroco Vintage 218 yds (199 m)/100 g, about 100 yds (90 m) for the main color and 50 to 75 yds (45 - 65 m) depending on the design for the contrast color.
Hooks H (5 mm) and G (4 mm), tapestry needle, and metal hoop 12” (30 cm) in diameter. The hoop you can find in craft stores or online.
