Light crochet shawl with wave stitch

Ocean Crest Shawl, crochet pattern in Malabrigo Sock
All modeled pictures were made by Day in the Light Photography.
Thanks, Anna-Lisa and Kristi, for providing beautiful photos.

The Ocean Crest Shawl is a crochet shawl inspired by the ocean beach. Like solid lines of the sand and changing waves of the ocean, the shawl works in alternating sections of plain double crochet reminiscent of the sand, and a wave stitch pattern reminiscent of the water rolling onto the shore. This is a triangular, asymmetrical shawl that’s worked from one tip and gradually widens as it progresses.

Inspiration
This is a very unusual project, and it started not with the idea of a specific design but with the idea of creating a magazine. Several designers got together and wanted to make a magazine fully led by designers. We named it inTANDEM. We launched a Kickstarter campaign and were successfully funded to publish 4 issues of inTANDEM for the full year. Three issues: 01-Fall, 02-Winter, and 03-Spring, are for knitters, and one 04-Summer is for crocheters.

In this blog post, I already shared the story of how I joined the 02-Winter issue with cables, and of course, as a bi-stitchual designer, I wanted to add my design to the crochet issue 04-Summer, too.

The Ocean Crest Shawl was inspired by summertime at the beach. Ocean waves and sand transformed into two different stitch patterns that alternate through the shawl. I also wanted the design will be an easy project, so that you can actually work on your vacation at the beach. And I always love it when you can work the yarn up to the last inch, that's why I chose this construction - work until you run out of yarn. All the details come together nicely and become the Ocean Crest Shawl.

Yarn
All the yarn for inTANDEM was provided by Malabrigo Yarn. We were very grateful for this collaboration.
For my design, Ocean Crest Shawl, I used Malabrigo Sock in color 863 Zarzamora.
I made a reel on Instagram with unpacking and winding this yarn. Look at it here.

Malabrigo Sock 863 zarzamora

Malabrigo Sock is a light fingering weight yarn with 440 yds (402 m)/ 3.5 oz (100 g), 100% Superwash Merino Wool.
The yarn is soft, and in crochet fabric it drapes beautifully. I enjoyed working with it; the hook was gliding easily. Here is my IG reel with a few moments of how I crochet with this yarn.

Would you like to see what kind of yarn other people chose to work this pattern? Here's my Instagram post with pictures of my testers.

Construction
This is an asymmetrical, triangular shawl that’s worked from one tip and gradually widens as it progresses.
And because of this construction, you can easily change the length of the shawl. Make it shorter, or longer (in this case, you'll need more yarn than the pattern says).
If you're using 2 full skeins of fingering yarn, you can work them almost up to the last inch. Repeat the Wave stitch pattern as long as you can with your yarn, just finish repeats with any 2 rows of single crochet.

Stitch patterns
Two stitch patterns are involved in this design:
  • Double crochet sections work with increases in every row. It will give plenty of relaxing crochet time.
  • The Wave stitch pattern is used for straight sections. No increases involved, but because you'll work different stitches here (sc, hdc, dc, tr), you need to pay a little more attention than just the plain double crochet part. A chart for the Wave stitch pattern is included in the pattern.
If you would like to learn how to read charts, I have a video tutorial on my YouTube channel @natalia_yarncraft.

The pattern is written for one size, but you can always make your project shorter or longer.
