Yarnsgiving 2024

Cutlery Pouch free knitting pattern

cutlery pouch free knitting pattern
This year I'm participating in the new event Yarnsgiving.
This event is organized by Craft Yarn Council (CYC). The time for the 2024 year's event is October 12th (I love yarn day) through December 3rd (Giving Tuesday). The idea is to make (knit, crochet, or craft) something with yarn and give it to others.
During this event, several knit, crochet, and other crafts patterns will be available for free on the websites of participating designers, check Yarnsgiving.com or CYC social media for more details.

I decided to make for this event a cute Cutlery Pouch and share the pattern for this project with everyone who will be crafting during Yarnsgiving.

This knitting pattern is available for free here, on my blog.
If you prefer to use pdf-file, and print it, or work from screens, the pattern is available on Ravelry or in my Payhip store for purchase.

Cutlery Pouch Knitting Pattern:

Sizes: Large/Medium. If you see two numbers in the instruction, the first one is for size Large, and the second is for size Medium, for example, 26/18. If you see only one number, both sizes work the same.
Large size is intended for 3 tableware, and Medium is for 2 tableware.

Measurements: 7.6" (19 cm) high and 4/2.8" (10/7 cm) wide

Yarn: Cotton or cotton blend yarn in worsted or aran weight, for 1 pouch you'll need 55/35 yds (50/32 m).
Sample made with I Love This Cotton 100% cotton, 180 yds (165 m)/100 g in color 24 Ivory.

Here are a few alternative yarn options for you for example on the WEBS website:
Cascade Yarns Nifty Cotton or Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, both options have plenty of colors to choose from.

Needles: size US 4 (3.5 mm) or the size to obtain gauge.
The type of needles depends on your way of knitting in the round.
This pouch has a relatively small circumference, please choose your preferred method to work in the round, you can work:
  • with 4 or 5 DPNs
knitting with dpns
  • or use the Magic loop method
magic loop knitting
  • or use 2 circular needles
knitting with 2 circular needles
The pattern doesn't describe how to divide stitches between needles, use your preferred method and dived stitches evenly on your needles.

A few extra words about circular needles in the pictures above. The needles with turquoise color cables are from Knitter's Pride (also known as Knit Pro) Mindful collection. I own The Gratitude Set and often use these needles, I like the stainless steel tips, and my favorites are swivel cords.
I have a video from one of my Instagram Monthly Live chats, where I talked about this set and showed, what is included and what I like about it, you can find the recording of this episode on my Youtube channel, starting from the 33rd minute.
The Knitter's Pride doesn't sell needles directly to consumers, but you can often find them in local yarn stores or online. For example, WEBS (yarn.com) has a big variety of Knitter's Pride needles. If you'll be looking for yarn there, don't skip the needles section too.

Notions and more: Yarn needle, scissors, marker, extra yarn, or other items to decorate the pouch.

Gauge: 24 sts and 34 rows ( or rnds) = 4" (10 cm). The gauge is not crucial but it will affect the size of the finished project.

Cord
Option 1: using 3 different colors of scrap yarn make a braid about 16" (40 cm ) long, and make a knot on each end.
Option 2: using 2 colors of scrap yarn make an I-cord, alternating colors in each row.
Place the cord through holes in the pouch. You can decide where to start, in the middle or on the side of the pouch.

Finishing
Weave in all loose ends. Decorate the ends of the cord with little extras depending on the season you're making the pouch for. For example little jingle bells or leaves like my sample show.
